Arlene Canale

May, 2011

My name is Arlene Canale and I have been a patient at Atlantic Coast Living Fit Center for almost 19 years.  It has been a long and difficult journey to get control of my weight and nutrition over these past 19 years, but this is the only thing that has worked for me.

In 2003 I had gastric bypass surgery.  I had been keeping off 100 pounds for over 10 years utilizing the HMR program at Atlantic Coast Living Fit Center, but I needed some help to go any further.  With the help of Debbe Bourgoin, RD, I made the difficult decision to go ahead and have bypass surgery.  The first year was wonderful and the weight just fell off.  I was doing everything I was supposed to do – eating protein, taking my vitamins and exercising.  After a while the old habits started to rear their ugly head and I reverted back to eating and doing what I wanted to do.  My weight started to creep up ever so slowly and I realized I needed help again and came back to Atlantic Coast Living Fit Center and my nutrition expert, Debbe Bourgoin, RD.

I started back in March 2010 and have succeeded in dropping over 30 pounds with Debbe’s help.  I use HMR entrees and shakes on a regular basis.  I now eat a more balanced diet which includes lots of fruits and vegetables.  Gastric bypass surgery is not a cure for obesity but a tool to help the morbidly obese get control of their weight.  I attend a weekly meeting and keep daily food records and exercise daily.  These are the tools that I need to continue to lose weight and then maintain my weight.

Doctors don’t always tell you about all the pieces you need to have in place in order to be successful after gastric bypass surgery.  But with my long history of struggling to control my weight and with the help of Atlantic Coast Living Fit Center, I have been successful.  Every day is a challenge, but I am continuing to learn and practice what to do and what to eat in order to be successful.

Eileen Fisher

My name is Eileen Fisher. I am 47 years old.  According to my BMI, I am morbidly obese. My ultimate goal is to have gastric bypass surgery. Upon seeing the surgeon I was told I needed to lose at least 50 pounds before he would even consider operating. He directed me to the Living Fit Center. Insurance guidelines also required me to be enrolled in a medically supervised weight loss program for six consecutive months. My joining the Center’s Decision-Free™ Diet program fulfilled those requirements. I have been participating in the program since August 11, 2008 and have already lost over 90 pounds!

I have been on numerous diets throughout my life, a constant roller coaster of losing and gaining. There are many factors that make this program so easy to follow, which results in the success I am experiencing. The small and intimate weekly group classes have been invaluable to me. I truly look forward to my Monday nights together with the others who are on a somewhat similar journey. The HMR coach is inspiring – always giving positive motivation to move us forward.

The weekly check-ins by phone keep me on track for the rest of the week. The staff is small in number, which makes it easy to feel important – not just someone lost in the shuffle.

My HMR coach is constantly giving us hints and as a class we are always sharing ideas of how to include and improve our PA (physical activity).  I have never exercised like this in my life!

Each day I look forward to making the choice of “getting moving” — whether it is for a short 15 minutes or a longer 45 minute bout.  I truly believe that this is the key to my success this time around.

And, of course, the meal replacements are delicious and satisfying. Again, the class is full of ideas on how to add variety and fun to them. I never find myself hungry.

I still have quite a way to go to reach my goal but I know that with the support of everyone at the Atlantic Coast Living Fit Center, I am well on my way!

Betty Chisko

One year ago my weight was getting out of control. I decided to do something about it. I attended a bariatric surgery seminar. When I left the seminar, I made an appointment for a consultation with the surgeon. During the visit, my surgeon told me I would be required to lose 60 lbs. before he could safely perform the surgery and suggested that I go to Atlantic Coast Living Fit to explore their weight loss options.

I attended a 90 minute orientation where we reviewed the HMR Structured Weight Loss Programs. After listening to all of the information, I made the decision to participate in the in-clinic program. Because I knew I could not just use shakes and entrees alone and stay on the diet, I made the decision to try the Healthy Solutions diet plan which consists of 3 HMR Shakes, 2 HMR Entrees and 5 servings of vegetables & fruits a day.

I was skeptical at first because all of the other diets I had ever tried did not work. My pattern was to lose and gain the pounds right back. To my surprise and delight that first week, I lost 8 lbs. which was the most amount of weight I had ever lost on any diet!

As time went on and I attended my weekly educational classes, I learned to use more fruits and vegetables in my diet, the importance of using portion controlled meal replacements, and the need to make physical activity a part of my daily life. These specific behavioral changes and other strategies are all necessary to get the weight off and keep it off regardless of my surgery!

I started the program May 25, 2006, lost 65.8 lbs by May 1, 2007 and had lap band surgery on May 29, 2007.

All of the skills I learned during my participation in the HMR program have better prepared me for life after surgery. I have already changed my way of eating. I am now aware of the proper selection of foods and the importance of avoiding high calorie low volume food. The HMR program has helped me to practice making healthier choices and to use meal replacements as part of my regular diet which will ensure my success along with the bariatric surgery!
